Learn all the vital aspects of writing a play, from the initial idea to the finished play on the stage

Session Nine: What Are You Trying to Say?

Issues regarding representation, inclusion and diversity. How to create and embed themes into your play, and tease out themes which are intrinsic in your material. Sharpening and developing themes. The three main ways of getting your message across to an audience: didactic, dialectic or complex and nuanced.

Learning outcomes:

Students will grapple with many of the issues facing theatre today. They will understand the importance of representing diverse characters with respect and responsibility, as well as the importance of giving voice to writers and characters that have traditionally been under-represented on stage.

Through fun but powerful practical written exercises, students will know how to identify the themes in their work and how to tease these out and develop these into coherent ideas and messages. They will feel empowered that they have something to say to the world from their unique perspective and will have an understanding of the various practical ways in which they can deliver their message through the medium of their play.

Course Outline:

This comprehensive 11-month course guides the aspiring playwright through all the fundamental important aspects of playwriting, from generating ideas and creating characters, to structuring a story for the stage. Each two-hour workshop explores one or more aspects in depth, including creating conflict and drama, developing themes and message, worldbuilding, engaging your audience throughout, how to format a play as a written script, and writing sparkling, purposeful dialogue which leaps off the page.

The course combines theory with practical advice and first-hand experience, covering full-length plays, short plays and monologues. Participants are encouraged to create work which will be producible by theatres in the real world. The workshops include written exercises alongside engagement with classic and recent play texts and performed scenes. Students are empowered to believe their unique, diverse voice is important and valuable to the world of theatre and are encouraged to get their work, along with their diverse characters, out into the real world.

Suitable for beginners and anyone who has previously tried writing a play.
