Write On! Interviews: Kate Potter

Write On! interviews author Kate Potter.

Kate says “I am an author, teacher and gardener based in Kent. The Absolutes is my first novel and I’m currently working on the second. I have a past life as a photographer and have an MA in Photography. I think the visual element of being a photographer translates into my writing, as it’s a visual, immersive experience. I live with my husband, son, five cats and am expecting two ducks.”

WO: How would you describe your writing to someone new to it?

KP: My writing explores psychology, how relationships shape us and how nature mirrors our experiences. I love poetry, so there’s definitely a poetic leaning to my writing. I don’t shy away from weighty topics. However, I do like to imbue the weight with something otherworldly, occasionally veering onto the supernatural by pushing the boundaries of reality. I like including humour into the darkest moments too. Even though my writing tackles dark subjects, there’s always light in it.

WO: Can you tell us a bit about your latest book, The Absolutes?

KP: My debut novel, The Absolutes, is a compilation of passages written by a father to his estranged daughter filled with memories, thoughts, feelings and moments with grief, loss and love as a propulsive force throughout. It explores the simplicity of the moment, yet also the complexity of its context. I find I’m compelled to write about how memory and loss shape our lives and how we see the world around us – particularly in the small moments.

WO: What inspired you to write in the first place and what inspires you now?

KP: Reading was my main inspiration. Reading the work of similar writers and deciding I had something to say as well. It’s always been a theme throughout my life and my father was a writer, and was incredibly encouraging and supportive of any writing attempts I made.

WO: We have previously explored the theme of ‘Mindset.’ What helps you get into the right frame of mind to write? Do you have any tips to prevent your mindset from being disrupted?

KP: Music is my muse and always has been. I’m lost without it! I could write anywhere as long as I have the right music playing either on the record player or in headphones. My mindset does frequently get disrupted though, so I always make sure I have time that is entirely mine such as a day off from work and I have the house to myself. It can take an hour or two to really get into the zone and I find late at night is also a great time. It’s when my mind really wakes up and everyone has gone to bed. Ensuring no one will interrupt is key. Don’t answer the phone or text anyone! It can wait.

WO: What one piece of advice would you give an aspiring writer?

KP: Never give up, no matter how long it takes or how many rejections come your way. It comes with the territory. Rejections aren’t a reflection on your ability as writer, but they may be a reflection on how patient you are! Always be aware of what could be improved in your work. If your book is getting repeatedly rejected, it’s probably a sign it wasn’t ready, and you still have another layer to add. Never stop editing: simplify sentences, get rid of flabby text and think harder. On days you can’t write, read.

WO: Can you tell us anything about future projects?

KP: I’m currently working on my next novel: When Nights Pound, I Always Hear Howling Birds. It centres around twin brothers, one of whom is the narrator speaking to us from the afterlife. He stays with his twin who lives on the fringes of society and follows 24 hours of his life in the quest for redemption.

WO: Lastly, if you could choose one fictional animal/creature to be a pet or companion, who would it be and why?

KP: Pegasus, definitely. Horses are amazing animals, especially the winged variety. I love that he found a spring that blesses those who drink from it with the ability to write poetry. And he’s incredibly beautiful and always there. When you look up at night, he’s made of stars.
