Write On! Interviews: Writer Megi Adamou

Write On! interviews writer Megi Adamou.

Migena Ramaj Adamou is a community worker who loves writing in her free time. Megi mainly writes poetry but has written a novel as well. She loves people and believes that loving others is the best ‘poetry’ she could ever leave behind in this world.

WO: How would you describe your writing to someone new to it?

MA: I would certainly hope someone would glimpse love in my work: love for life itself, love for beauty, love for justice whenever an injustice is seen, love from another world.

WO: Can you tell us a bit about your latest book The Melody Of My Love?

MA: The Melody Of My Love is a novel. Written in the form of a letter addressed to a young man, a diary of sorts, it’s a love story of two high school sweethearts who have been divided by past tragic circumstances; circumstances that have a strong grip on their present reality.

WO: What inspired you to write in the first place, and what inspires you now?

MA: I’m inspired by the call to do something when I see an injustice, or at least to raise awareness. As Emily Dickinson wrote: If I can stop one heart from breaking, I will not live in vain. What inspires me now? The beauty and the pain in this journey called life is my inspiration.

WO: In the past, Write On! has explored the theme ‘Keep Going!’  – creating with perseverance and courage.  With that in mind, what markers have defined your writing journey? Tell us about where you’ve had to dig deep to keep going.

MA:  It was an article written as part of a course on Covid- 19. It was heartbreaking to hear police sirens and think of our old people dying in their own homes all by themselves. I thought this was something that we as humans should have difficulty forgiving ourselves for, in terms of allowing it to happen.

WO: What one piece of advice would you give an aspiring writer?

MA: Read all the time. This is advice that is first and foremost for myself. Read classics like Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Dickens, etc. Even in the most microscopic tiny details, the language used is so deep and well thought-out, as are the stories and the morals.

WO: Question from Twitter user: @ClaireBuckle. Do you use writing software such as Grammarly?

MA: No, I don’t. I have loving and caring friends who kindly serve as my proofreaders.

WO: Can you tell us anything about future projects?

MA: After four years of starting to call the UK home and a long pause in writing, I and some other book-loving friends have started a book club that I’m excited about. We read and discuss books and also invite authors, researchers, and others to share. I plan to write another poetry book in due course. I’m also conducting interviews. It’s just amazing to hear people’s stories. I publish my work and my interviews on my website: albanianvoice.net.

WO: Lastly, if you could choose one fictional animal/creature to be a pet or companion, who would it be and why?

MA: I love this question! I would choose Gandalf from The Lord Of The Rings. He is Bilbo’s mentor, teacher, and protector. Wisdom is something I crave. I have found wisdom in the lives of older generations, amongst our grandmothers and grandfathers, and that’s such a treasure for me.
